8. Richmond’s former anti-gun police chief in trouble – over a gun

File this under the heading “Only police should have guns.” Note
that Oliver admits he did not know the law on transporting a handgun
on an airplane. What would HE have told YOU if YOU had made that

This news story, from the local NBC TV station, WWBT channel 12, appeared early
in the week as a local color piece. By Friday, it became another entry in the
catalog of Stupid Gun Laws.

On Monday, October 20th, channel 12 reported that over the weekend, Detroit
Police Chief Jerry Oliver had been detained briefly at a Detroit airport after
baggage screeners found a loaded pistol in his luggage. Oliver, the
former Chief
of Police for Richmond, VA, had packed the gun in a “checked” bag. He
was quoted
saying he tried to do it right, but “didn’t know all the rules, ”
such as having
to unload the gun.

On Friday, October 24th, a follow-up report said that Oliver may be prosecuted
for carrying a gun illegally on the job. In Michigan, law enforcement officers
are authorized to carry concealed handguns. But the only persons recognized as
law enforcement officers are those who have a state-issued license identifying
them as such. Oliver has applied for his license, but hasn’t received it yet.
(He has worked in Detroit for something like two years.) Prosecutors contend he
should have obtained a concealed handgun permit in the interim, which
he did not
do.
