FIREARMS VIOLATION BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT

Remember the agreement Smith & Wesson signed with the federal government in
March? The gun manufacturer agreed to implement gun control measures in
exchange for a little lawsuit relief from the feds. The Clinton
administration and HUD agreed to purchase only Smith & Wesson products for
use by federal law enforcement agencies.

There’s just one problem, says Georgia Representative Bob Barr. The agreement
could violate the Competition in Contracting Act, which was enacted to ensure
that U.S. government procurements are subject to a competitive process. The
agreement could also violate Clinton’s own Executive Order 13005, which
reiterates the importance of competition in procuring government property.

But hey…what’s a little exercise in self-contradiction if it makes the
anti-gunners happy and gives the American public warm fuzzy feelings? Surely
that matters a little more than implementing real solutions to curb gun
violence.
