OAKLAND PARK– The intended victim of a carjacker struck back early this morning, when he pulled out a gun and killed the would-be robber.
Around 3:20 a.m., the owner of a 1994 Camaro pulled into the parking lot of Summerlake Apartments, 3449 NW 44 St. As he was getting out of the car, a young man approached him and demanded the keys, said Jim Leljedal, Broward Sheriff’s Office spokesman. When the victim refused, the suspect began pistol-whipping him.
In the midst of the assault, the victim pulled out his own gun and fired more than once, killing the would-be carjacker, Leljedal said.
A possible second suspect fled in a white Chevrolet Cavalier.
The shooting victim has not been identified. He is described as a black male, possibly 16 to 20 years old, 5?7? tall and weighing 120 pounds. His hair was braided in short dreadlocks. He had numerous distinctive tattoos: on his left forearm, the letters ?BOGE?; on his left bicep, the words ?show boy?; on his right bicep, the word ?thug?; on his chest, a heart symbol; on the right shoulder of his back, the words ?ruff rida? with ?ruff? written horizontally and ?rida? on the vertical, both words sharing the letter r; on his left shoulder, a cross; and on the back of his left hand, the phrase ?I (heart symbol) U.?
Investigators are not releasing the victim’s name out of concern for his safety.
