Road rage: using cars as weapons
Deliberately running over pedestrians is more common than most think!
By Robert Hager
NBC NEWS CORRESPONDENT
WASHINGTON, Feb. 27 ? A stunning incident in California is the latest
example of a horrifying and unpredictable event: a driver using his car ?
apparently deliberately ? to kill people. It happens more often than most
think and always the question is why.
EIGHTEEN-YEAR-OLD David Attias watched from behind glass in a Santa Barbara
courtroom Tuesday, as his arraignment was postponed one week. He?s accused
of racing his car into a crowd late Friday night, killing four and severely
injuring a fifth, then jumping up and down and shouting in the gruesome
aftermath.
He was attacked by stunned onlookers until police arrived and charged him
with murder ? influenced by alcohol and drugs.
His anguished parents were outside court Tuesday ? his mother and his
father, Daniel Attias, TV director of Ally McBeal and other series.
?We?re both just struck by how hopelessly inadequate any words could be,?
Mr. Attias said. ?But on behalf of my wife, I just want to say how
devastated and heartbroken we are for everybody who has been affected by
this, this very horrible tragedy. And we know that it has affected, not
just, the loved ones and the families of the victims, whose grief must be
unspeakable and we extend whatever compassion we are capable of, but we know
it has left a terrible, terrible gash in this whole community. And we can?t
begin to tell you how saddened we are.?
There were flowers and mourners, Tuesday, by the roadside where it all
happened.
But experts say the attacks are not as rare as one would think and that
while guns get a huge amount of attention, the use of cars as weapons, is
every bit as lethal.
RECENT INCIDENTS
In Cosa Mesta, California, a mentally ill driver slammed his car purposely
into a day-care-playground. Four children were killed, one was injured.
In San Diego, an alcoholic drug user, who had just been left by his
girlfriend, stole a tank, mashed 20 vehicles and mowed down utility poles.
In Boston, a man drove into a New Year?s Eve celebrants and 21 were injured.
?A two ton vehicle in the hands of an irrational violent individual is every
bit as deadly as a machine gun in the hands of a terrorist,? says Louis
Mizell, a security specialist.
In a recent seven-year period, Mizell said, there were 22 cases of drivers
plowing into crowds, intentionally; 94 cases of ramming buildings and 221
cases of running down police officers.
In Washington, a driver slammed into a TV station, saying the world needed
to pay more attention to AIDS drugs.
In Sacramento, a trucker rammed his rig into the California State capitol,
committing suicide.
And now, in another community, Santa Barbara, there is mourning in the
latest, violent example of a car, used as a weapon, with deadly results.
