This was very much like what happened to my elderly mother last year,
except she was alone and the guy who broke in her home had a history
of rape/robbery/murder to his credit.

She was faced with him within a few seconds of the first indication
of trouble, the window breaking, and the cops took almost 15 min
to get there. She scared him with one point of her handgun so bad
he jumped right through the window to get away.

Of course, the papers IGNORED her use of a handgun to save herself.
