NBC NEWS AND WIRE REPORTS IKEDA, Japan, June 8 – In Japan’s
worst mass-killing since nerve gas was released on Tokyo’s subways six
years ago, a man armed with a kitchen knife forced his way into a grade
school on Friday and stabbed at least 29 people, killing eight children.
A 37-year-old suspect was in custody.

TWO CHILDREN were killed immediately and another six died
at hospitals after the attack in a suburb of the western Japan city of
Osaka, said Tetsuo Higashimoto, a fire department spokesman.
The injured were mostly seven and eight year-old students at the
school, and seven of those killed were girls, Japanese media said.
Two teachers were also injured, police said, including one
male teacher who was in critical condition and underwent emergency
surgery after the attack, which was believed to be unprecedented in
traditionally safe Japan.
While school shootings, such the 1999 massacre at
Columbine High School in Colorado, have become a grim part of life in
the United States, no random tragedy on such a scale has ever struck a
Japanese school.
