An unarmed man who allegedly broke into a Central City liquor store was
shot twice by a cashier Thursday, New Orleans police said.
The man, whose identity was withheld, was in fair condition at Charity
Hospital, police spokesman Joe Narcisse said. He appeared to be in his
late teens.
One of the .38-caliber bullets struck him in the right shoulder, the
other in the right side of the jaw, police said.
Police would not identify the clerk at the W and M package liquor store,
3140 Jackson Ave., between South Prieur Street and Seminole Lane.
The store does not allow customers in the store, and does business
through a window.
The suspect broke in through a rear, second-floor window, Narcisse said.
He said the man then made a hole in the floor so he could descend to the
store, on the first floor.
The cashier heard noises about 7:40 p.m. and screamed for the man to
stop.
Police said the man was shot as he lowered himself from the hole in the
ceiling.
The man, who was unarmed, will be booked with burglary of a business,
Narcisse said.
The woman, who was distraught afterward, was not charged in the
shooting, police said.
Investigators said they believe the shooting was justified, but are
referring the case to the district attorney’s office for review.
