Grand jury decides no prosecution for shooting

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — A Durham County grand jury says a gas station clerk
shouldn’t be prosecuted for chasing and shooting a man after the store
was robbed at gunpoint.

The jurors said Monday the case had been investigated enough and ordered
that “no further action be taken in this matter by law enforcement
authorities or the district attorney of this county.”

The grand jury could have called for further investigation or told
prosecutors to seek charges against clerk Atta Rehman, who said he was
acting in self-defense.

The jury also indicted Rodney Lamont Cameron on a charge of armed
robbery.

Cameron, 31, of Rougemont, was shot in the chest and face with a shotgun
following an armed robbery at an Amoco station on Chapel Hill Boulevard.

The brother of the station owner told police that Rehman acted in
self-defense after a man entered the store with a mask on his face and a
long-barreled gun.

The robber forced everyone onto the floor before fleeing with an
undisclosed amount of money, according to police reports. Rehman chased
the robber, who threatened Rehman before the shooting, the reports said.
