A Monday night carjacking cost one thief his life when the prospective
victim wrestled away his gun and shot him dead, authorities said.
Mako Tunson, 23, of the 5700 block of South Peoria Street was shot in
the head and killed about 11:15 p.m. Monday after he and another man
tried to steal a 1998 Buick Riviera at a Shell gas station on the corner
of 79th and State Streets, police said.
The owner of the car, a 23-year-old man, had filled up his tank and was
paying a station attendant through a window when Tunson and an
accomplice put a gun to his side and demanded he give up his car, police
said.
The man handed over his keys, but then grabbed Tunson’s gun and began
firing.
Tunson was struck once in the head and died at the scene, police said.
The other assailant, who also was armed, scrambled to the Buick and
managed to get away with it.
The car’s owner hailed a passing vehicle for help and waited at the
scene for police to arrive.
Police continued to search for the accomplice Tuesday, a man they
described as in his 20s, of medium build and wearing dark clothing. He
was last seen driving east on 79th Street in the stolen car. No charges
were expected against the car’s owner, police said.
