A 43-year-old Charlottesville man is accused of stabbing a woman in her Longwood Drive home on Tuesday, then driving her to the emergency room, police said.
Michael Jerome Vest was arrested and charged with malicious wounding, violating a protective order and resisting arrest, police said.
About 5:10 p.m. Tuesday, Michael Vest was arguing with Monique Vest in her duplex, where she lives with their children, said city police Sgt. C.R. Smith. Monique Vest, 22, was struck in the face, then stabbed in the back, Smith said.
Police said Vest drove her to the University of Virginia Medical Center, where she was in good condition late Tuesday.
Jaime Mejia, who lives next to Monique Vest, said Tuesday that he had heard her and a man yelling “bad words” at each other in her home about 10 days ago.
Mejia, 27, who moved with his 5-year-old daughter, 3-year-old son and wife from Los Angeles four months ago, said he sometimes worries about his children. “My kids get scared every time the police come over,” he said.
Michael Vest later called Monique Vest in the hospital and told her he was at home, Smith said.
Arriving at Michael Vest’s home, police were let in by one of his family members, Smith said. Vest attempted to flee through the back door but encountered Smith, the sergeant said.
The suspect then backed into another officer and a struggle ensued, Smith said.
As officers tried to handcuff the suspect, some paint cans were knocked over, making for a slippery struggle, Smith said.
