Local trooper halts theft at Fayette Mall Staff reports

Thanks to fast action by state trooper Hunter Martin, the only bracelet
several would-be thieves will be wearing this Valentine’s Day is the
kind you open with a key.

The Lawrenceburg-based lawman was off duty and shopping at Fayette Mall
in Lexington about 5 p.m. Monday when he heard a commotion nearby.

He ran out of Kay Jewelers to the Charming Gold kiosk, where he observed
three juveniles leaning over the counter of the unstaffed shop and
removing trays of valuables.

They fled through the mall with Martin giving chase after identifying
himself and drawing his revolver.

After exiting into the back parking lot near Dillard’s department store,
one of the juveniles urged the driver of an apparent get-away car to run
over the trooper. “I was able to persuade him not to do that,” Martin
said.

Martin, who already had called 911, was able to apprehend the driver
before Lexington-Fayette Urban County police officers arrived. However,
the three juveniles escaped on foot.

“We know who they are,” Martin said.

The trooper said he had just finished shopping for his girlfriend when
he dropped his Valentine’s gift and ran. He was able to retrieve his
present after the melee.

“I was just doing my job,” Martin said. “I’m on duty 24 hours a day.”
