Homeowner foils burglary attempt
Advocate staff report

A homeowner on Maribel Drive shot a man in self-defense Saturday morning
when he foiled an attempted robbery, said Baton Rouge Police spokesman
Cpl. Don Kelly.

At 9:10 a.m., a homeowner who lives in the 3500 block of Maribel Drive
woke up to the sound of a banging noise. His home had recently been
burglarized and he thought it might be happening again, Kelly said.

So, he took his handgun, walked through the house and out the front
door, but didn’t see anything. It wasn’t until he walked around to a
neighbor’s yard and looked at the back of his home that he saw two white
men, one with a crowbar, trying to pry the burglar bars off a window.
The homeowner yelled at the men who then fled, Kelly said.

One of the suspects ran away from the homeowner, but the other ran
toward and past him. The homeowner chased him, but the suspect turned
around and pointed a gun at the homeowner, Kelly said.

He said police believe the homeowner fired two shots at the man, who
then ran away.

Police caught both suspects, one of whom suffered a gunshot wound to the
upper body. The wounded man was taken to Earl K. Long Medical Center
where Kelly said he was in stable condition in intensive care under
police guard. Police are not releasing the suspect’s name yet because he
hasn’t been booked. Police said the suspect also didn’t have positive
identification.

The second suspect, Lance Russell, 39, of 2245 College Drive, has been
booked with attempted aggravated burglary and aggravated assault, Kelly
said.

No charges will be filed against the homeowner because he was acting in
self-defense, Kelly said. His name is not being released.
