Howard Dean on Gun Laws

Even more surprising to his Iowa audiences, Dean bragged that he has “an A rating’’ from the National Rifle Association, as governor of a state where homicides are so rare “we have passed no gun laws.’’ That statement provoked rebukes from some in the audience here, but Dean did not back off. Instead, he argued that “as Democrats, we ought to say, ‘Keep the (federal) laws we have, enforce them, but no new laws.’ Get the gun issue off the table. It cost Al Gore three states — and the presidency.’’
