WHO Proclaims Violence a Major Public-Health Problem

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared that violence has become a
major public-health problem throughout the world, the Gambian Independent
reported Aug. 26.
According to WHO’s First World Report on Violence and Health, millions of
people die each year from gun violence, and just as many suffer injuries –
some permanent disabilities — as a result of guns.
In addition, the report says that gun violence contributes to a number of
other health problems, including depression, illicit drug and alcohol
addiction, smoking, eating and sleeping disorders, and HIV and other
sexually transmitted diseases.
“Violence results from interplay of individual, relationship, community, and
structural factors,” the report said, adding that in order to create safe
and healthy communities, a strong commitment is needed from multiple sectors
at the international, national, and community levels.
The WHO report recommended a science-based public-health approach to curbing
violence. The report said that public-health officials lead the campaign.
“Through their vision and leadership, much can be done to establish national
plans and policies for violence prevention, to help facilitate the
collection of data to document and respond to the problem, to build
important partnerships with other sectors, and to ensure an adequate
commitment of resources to prevention efforts,” the report stated.
