Convicted killer gets life without parole

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A convicted killer, whose death sentence was overturned on appeal, has been sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Jefferson County Circuit Judge Alfred Bahakel on Friday sentenced Taurus Carroll to life in prison without parole.

The Alabama Supreme Court had overturned Carroll’s death sentence, noting that the jury had recommended life without parole on a 10-2 vote. The appeals court said Bahakel at the 1997 sentencing did not give adequate weight to mitigating circumstances in the case.

Carroll was convicted of killing Betty Long during a 1995 robbery in the Kingston community. He was 17 years old.

Mrs. Long’s family did not attend yesterday’s hearing. Her husband had asked Bahakel in 1997 to spare Carroll’s life so that everyday Carroll could remember what he did.

Co-defendant Mack Dailey earlier received a life prison sentence. At the time of the killing, Dailey was 15 and not eligible for the death penalty in Alabama.
