Windsor, Ontario, Canada: Friday’s announcement by Justice Minister Martin
Cauchon of a six-month grace period for those who register their guns by the
Jan. 1, 2003 deadline is a “major league insult to the firearms community
although some may see it and claim it as a victory. “The real purpose is to
slow down our organization’s initiatives and to take away the obvious impact
we are having,” states Wayne Fields President of the Law-Abiding
Unregistered Firearms Association. “Although a reprieve for those who
register by years end, it also provides time for those who will not register
to stay the course. With no way of knowing who has registered law
enforcement officers will have no choice but to put enforcement of this
stupid legislation on the back burner for the time being” claims Fields.
“Despite claims by the government of 70% compliance using their greatly
reduced numbers which are erroneous, we remain confident of a non-compliance
rate at 80% from our own government sources” concludes Fields.
Bruce Hutton, LUFA founder concurs with Fields but adds “Obviously the C-68
Titanic has taken on a greater amount of water than even we are aware. The
Federal Justice Minister is under extreme pressure to gain more time for the
Canadian Firearms Center.”
In the mean time this program remains a billion dollar boondoggle for the
Federal Government with no sign of relief in sight for the embattled justice
department.
LUFA executive indicate that they have many more surprises in store for
Justice Minister Cauchon and his department before the end of 2002 so stay
tuned.
