(GA) Father kills son during violent attack 01-12-03

The anti SD folks are always accusing us of deleting stories where
the two parties involved in a SD story know each other… (just
another Anti SD lie!, of course)
What they refuse to admit is that just because the two parties
involved in a SD situation know each other doesn’t make the attack
right nor does it lessen the need for SD…………………..

Fights between Robert Carpenter and his elderly father were nothing
new
to their Cairo Drive neighbors.

Neither were the deep purple bruises on 61-year-old Dallas
Carpenter’s
body.

On Saturday afternoon, Robert Carpenter attacked his father for the
last
time.

Bleeding from both arms, Dallas Carpenter pulled out his .25-caliber
pistol and shot his son to death.

“There is only so much a person can take. It was probably only a
matter
of time,” said Stacy Adams, who lives nearby.

Richmond County Deputy Coroner Grover Tuten said Robert Carpenter,
45,
was shot in the chest. He was pronounced dead at 5:40 p.m.

Richmond County Sheriff’s investigators spent the afternoon and early
evening at the Carpenter home, where the father has lived since 1975.

Dallas Carpenter, a retired serviceman, was not charged, pending
further
investigation, Investigator Matt Stocks said.

“There was a long history of domestic violence in the household,” he
said.

Two hours before the shooting, Robert
Carpenter was picked up by deputies and driven home because he was
drunk, Investigator Stocks said.

Dallas Carpenter told police his son began to hit him Saturday
afternoon
and then tried to choke him. That’s when he pulled the gun.

Deputies were called to the home at 4:30 p.m. and found the son
lying on
the floor. The father still had his pistol in his hand.

This is the second death for the Carpenter family in the past year.

Six months ago, Dallas Carpenter’s wife and Robert Carpenter’s mother
died, and her sister moved into the house. She was at the house when
the
shooting occurred.

Standing across the street watching police, one neighbor remembered a
different Robert Carpenter.

“Robert was a good person – until he started drinking.”
