Lafayette man shoots robber
By BRIAN GELLER
Gainesville, Florida – Sun staff writer
A Lafayette County resident shot and killed an armed man who broke into
his house late Tuesday night.
Brian Keith Franklin, 34, died at the scene of the incident, about 10
miles east of Mayo, the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office said. Franklin
lived in the county but kept no permanent address, the office said.
Franklin was shot by Raymond Robert Driver, 64, according to police
reports.
At about 10 p.m., Franklin arrived at the home, on County Road 420 in
Lafayette County, the sheriff’s office said. He knocked on the front door
and asked Driver’s wife, 60-year-old Georgia Helen Driver, to use the phone,
a report stated.
Seeing a gun protruding from Franklin’s clothing, the wife said no and
slammed the door.
Franklin then went around the back of the home. He broke a window, unlocked
the back door and went inside, Lafayette County Sheriff’s Investigator John
Young said.
Mrs. Driver called 911 and yelled for her husband, who came out of a
bedroom with a 12-gauge shotgun. Franklin pointed a .32-caliber revolver
at Driver. But Driver fired and hit Franklin, in his upper chest and left
arm. Franklin never got off a shot, Young said.
Franklin collapsed about 75 feet outside the home. Paramedics arrived soon
after but could not revive Franklin, who died at the scene.
Franklin’s half-brother lives in Suwannee County, but most of his family
lives in Arkansas, Young said.
An hour before the shooting, the Sheriff’s Office received a report of a
suspicious van at a nearby cemetery, Young said. When a deputy arrived, he
spoke with a young man who gave various identities, ran off, and was
later arrested, Young said. Deputies believe the man was with Franklin
earlier. The van at the graveyard and the revolver turned out to have been
reported stolen, Young said, adding that several counties wanted
Franklin for burglaries and drug activities. Drug-making supplies in the
van were connected to Franklin, Young said.
“He’s been moving from one place to another. He never stays anywhere too
long,” Young said, adding that the Drug Enforcement Administration and
Florida Department of Law Enforcement also are investigating.
“Everybody’s been actively looking for him.”
No charges are pending or expected against Driver, said Young, who
described the incident as self-defense.
“It was a standoff,” Young said. “And the bigger gun won.”
