Child gun safety

Child gun safety
By Officer Tom Hanshaw
It’s important that parents teach their children about gun safety.
Although there may not be a firearm in your home, your child could
encounter one at a friend’s house or even find a discarded one. It’s
important for their safety, as well as for others, that they know
what to do if that ever happens. Sometimes feelings about gun
ownership or gun control can be controversial. That controversy
should not deter parents from taking the time to educate their
children about the proper caution that needs to be taken if they find
a gun. As with all safety information, parents should decide how much
they feel that their child is able to understand. As part of my
safety talks recently, I reviewed gun safety tips with Amesbury
students in grades K-4. The second graders also viewed a short video
featuring a cartoon character named Eddie Eagle. The cartoon features
a few short stories with children in situations where a gun is found.
