An off-duty Grand Crossing District tactical officer foiled a
barbershop robbery while he was getting a haircut at a West Side
shop, according to police reports. The 33-year-old officer was at
Carter’s Barbershop, 3254 W. Cermak, when the barber buzzed in a
young man at the door, said Marquette District Sgt. John Kenny. Two
more young men rushed in, and the three announced they were robbing
the shop, which was serving about six customers, police said. One
suspect began collecting wallets and jewelry from two customers, and
another suspect began ushering customers to the back of the shop,
Kenny said. The officer started to the back of the shop, but then
turned, identified himself and drew his weapon, Kenny said. When one
suspect failed to drop his gun, the officer fired several shots. No
one was hit. The suspect dropped his gun, and the three men attempted
to flee. But the door was locked and they could not escape. The
officer, a patron of the barbershop since childhood, held the
suspects until other officers arrived.
