Killer gets early prison release

Princeton, IN November 8 — A man sentenced to 35 years in prison for the 1981 slaying of a Gibson County tavern owner will be released from prison in April after serving only 12 years.

Terry Lee Avery pleaded guilty in 1991 to manslaughter charges in the killing of Mackey, Indiana, tavern owner Jackie Kendall.

The Gibson County prosecutor says Kendall’s good behavior behind bars and his completion of education and other programs cut his time served to just 12 years.

That’s upset some of Kendall’s relatives.

Avery was arrested six weeks after Kendall’s 1981 murder, but he escaped from the Gibson County Jail and spent nine years on the lam.

He surrendered to police shortly before pleading guilty to manslaughter in 1991.
