Cops probe shooting during reported burglary

An intruder got more than he bargained for in north suburban Wilmette
late Monday when a resident shot him twice before he hastily exited the
front window of an upscale home.

The 31-year-old suspect showed up for treatment at St. Francis Hospital
in Evanston later that evening — arriving in a BMW sports utility
vehicle reported stolen from the same homeowner in a separate burglary.

“The house was burglarized the night before,” said Wilmette police
spokesman Roger Ockrim.
“We’re not certain he’s the person who did it.
The investigation is so new.”

No charges had been filed as of midday, when police were waiting to
interview the suspect after surgery, Ockrim said.

Police declined to name the homeowner, whom Ockrim described as a
54-year-old man home with his wife and two children.

The village of Wilmette has an ordinance that bans the ownership of
handguns. Ockrim said that he did not know if the resident would be
charged with any violations.

The homeowner was “understandably upset,” Ockrim said.

Police first responded to a residential burglary alarm at 10:34 p.m.
Monday. While officers were en route to the house — on the 0-100 block
of Linden Avenue, walking distance from the Bahai Temple and Lake
Michigan — a police dispatcher received a call from the homeowner, who
said he had confronted the burglar and fired several shots, according to
a police news release.

The intruder entered the home using a key obtained during the earlier
burglary, Ockrim said.

Since October, Wilmette police have reported a number of overnight
burglaries in neighborhoods east of Green Bay Road.
