National Guard Soldier Says Military Training Helped Him Run Down
Intruder Outside His Home

BISMARCK, N.D. July 27, 2004 – A National Guard soldier who returned
from Iraq this spring says his military training kicked in when he saw
an intruder outside his home about 5 a.m.

“I yelled, ‘Hey you, stay right there,’” said Chris Seil, who was
awakened by his wife and sounds of shattered glass early Saturday
morning.

The intruder ran away, Seil said, and he grabbed a handgun from the
night stand and ran out the door.

“I didn’t even think, I just grabbed it,” Chris Seil said. “I think it
was a military thing.”

Trish Seil watched her husband from the bedroom window.

“I didn’t know if this guy had a weapon, so that kinda freaked me out a
little bit,” she said.
“Chris just ran out, and I couldn’t really see him for most of the
time.”

Barefoot and wearing only pajama bottoms,
Seil jumped a fence and chased the suspect across apartment complex
parking lots. When it looked like the man might escape, Seil said, he
cocked the handgun and told him to “stop or I’ll shoot.”

“I didn’t know what he did in my house, if he hurt someone or stole
something,” said Seil, a mechanic with the Guard’s 957th Multi-Role
Bridge Company.

Seil said the man stopped and tried to punch him, but he kicked the
intruder’s legs out from under him and jumped on his back. He said he
walked the intruder to a nearby police car, holding on to the man’s
shirt and ponytail.

Bismarck Police Lt. Dan Donlin said the officer parked nearby was one of
several who responded to the area after getting a 911 call.

A 20-year-old woman told authorities the suspect broke into her
apartment and forced three boys to follow him while he vandalized
vehicles with a baseball bat, Donlin said. Police said the woman
apparently knew the suspect.

Authorities reported more than $1,200 in damage to two vehicles, Donlin
said. A bat was found in the area. Police said the suspect fled when
they arrived and officers did not see him until Chris Seil walked him to
the police car.
Burleigh County prosecutor Leann Bertsch said David Bad Brave, 19, was
charged Monday with burglary, terrorizing and giving false information
to law enforcement officers. He was jailed on a $3,500 cash or surety
bond.
