Brady Campaign Fudges Figures (AGAIN)
Brady Campaign Fudges Figures (AGAIN)
In the press release by the Brady Bunch there was the phrase,
“preferred by criminals over law abiding citizens eight to one.”
It is supposedly from an ATF report as documented in:
http://www.saf.org/LawReviews/FoxAndShah.htm
The actual quote from the above paper is:
“Using the weapons identified in the Anti-Crime Act, in
April of 1994, an “Assault Weapons profile” released by the
United States Department of the Treasury, Bureau of Alcohol,
Tobacco and Firearms (“BATF”) announced that the nineteen
assault weapons targeted in the Anti-Crime Act comprise only
one percent of the guns in circulation in the United States.
[135] However, these weapons account for up to eight percent
of the guns traced to criminal activity. [136] These assault
weapons are preferred by criminals over law- abiding
citizens eight to one, ranking in the top ten of all guns
traced to criminal activity. [137]“
Note the use of trace data, not a representative sample. One
percent vs eight percent equals 8:1.
Also, the Brady Bunch uses the “trace” numbers and the
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives
(BATFE) has published a declaration that the use of
“trace” has NO relationship to a firearm being used to
commit a crime. Law enforcement personnel run “trace”
checks for any number of reasons unrelated to the firearm
being used in a crime.
Once again the antis “fudge” their numbers, to the point
where BATFE called them on the “trace” misrepresentation
practice.
