Dear Colorado Gun Rights Activist:

Once again, thank you for your strong efforts these past weeks. As
the title of this update suggests, you truly do make a difference.
Your faxes, emails and phone calls have had a pronounced effect.

State Rep. Doug Dean APPEARS TO BE STARTING TO come around to your
way of thinking. But there’s talk of his cutting backroom deals.

I’m sure you remember Rep. Dean saying in 1999 that he would work to
make “inevitable” gun show restrictions more bearable. Well, he has
felt your heat and seen the light.

Dean stated to the press this past week that he NOW opposes gun show
“loophole” legislation as a step towards private regulation. YOU
DESERVE THE CREDIT FOR THIS.

So what does this mean to you, the activist? It means it is time to
increase our efforts, and here’s why:

Rep Dean is the Republican Majority Leader, and has many different
backroom maneuvers at his disposal — TO KILL BILLS OR TO HELP THEM
PASS. He is under obvious pressure from the well-publicized media
darlings of the anti-gun movement and GOVERNOR “GUN CONTROL” OWENS.

Don’t think for a minute that if Dean could find a way to get that
crowd off of his back, he will. Remember — politicians are capable
of saying one thing and doing another as easily as you or I draw
breath. And, of course, Rep Dean still has not withdrawn his
support of other aspects of GOVERNOR OWENS’ Gun Control 2000 agenda.

INSIDERS REPORT SOME OR ALL OF THE FOLLOWING BILLS MAY BE INCLUDED
IN SOME SORT OF BACKROOM DEAL, IF YOU DON’T KEEP UP THE PRESSURE:

* Prohibitions against guns for 18-20 year olds. (This will make
it easier for gang members to wreak havoc on law-abiding youths, who
I might add, are old enough to arm for the various conflicts around
the globe).

* Opening up Juvenile records in order to deny more law-abiding
adults the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

* A ban on SO-CALLED “straw purchases” (ALREADY ILLEGAL UNDER
VARIOUS STATE AND FEDERAL LAWS), which is in reality merely a step
towards making it illegal to give a firearm to someone you care
about for the purpose of self-protection.

* Expansion of the Brady powers already in place at the urging of
the Governor — already even acquittals of matters settled years and
years ago are getting people turned down for purchases.

And if you are wondering why some other so-called “gun groups” are
NOT opposed to some of these threatening measures, such as
background checks, believe me, so am I. You may hear politicians
and compromisers urging “common sense,” saying a few simple measures
do not equal “gun control” — I think we both know better than that.

So we need to keep the PRESSURE on Rep. Dean and company, making
sure that they don’t falter and cave into the liberal media pressure
and the unconstitutional requests of Governor Owens by staying in
contact with them.

Please call Representative Doug Dean, and your own legislators, and
tell them plainly that the good people of Colorado want NO MORE GUN
CONTROL.

Your immediate action is necessary, once again, to protect your
rights from the anti-gun crowd. If we let the momentum slip away,
the politicians will slink into the dark back rooms of the
Statehouse and cut their deals.
