5,069,780 UNVERIFIED FIREARMS IN BILLION-DOLLAR+ GUN REGISTRY
By Garry Breitkreuz, MP – November 29, 2004

(1) In August of 1999, one of five demands by the Canadian Police Association was that: “The accuracy of the information that is collected in the firearms registration database be verified.”

(2) After spending more than a billion dollars, 5,059,780 (73%) of the firearms are still “unverfified” in the Liberal gun registry.

(3) How does anyone accurately “verify” a firearm by phone? And yet, the Canada Firearms Centre claims they have done it 98,683 times.

(4) On November 17, 2004, the Canada Firearms Centre sent out Special Bulletin for Police #61 claiming: “The Canada Firearms Centre (CAFC) has established a Verifiers’ Network with over 5,000 approved verifiers to assist businesses and individuals that need to have their firearms verified.” Yet in response to my Access to Information Act request they say that as of October 19, 2004 only 1,654 of those volunteer “verifiers” have actually verified a firearm in the last year.

(5) The ATI response from the Firearms Centre also reveals that they are receiving many complaints about the effectiveness of their “Verifier Network”.
- 62 Complaints – “No Verifier in area.”
- 28 Complaints – “Contacted Verifier but not success.”
- 35 Complaints – “Verifier’s phone not working.”
- 68 Complaints – “Verifier not enough knowledge.”
