“METRO” TRIES AN END RUN AROUND YOUR PRIVACY
Tomorrow, “Metro” the Portland area’s “regional” government
(<http://www.metro.dst.or.us/>) will announce an attempt to impose
background checks at gun shows in any building they control. (i.e.
Portland Expo Center, Convention Center.)
Metro will start by trying to force gun show promoters (primarily Ken
Glass of Rose City Gun Collectors) to encourage “voluntary” background
checks through dealers. (It is unclear how a dealer could run a
background check to transfer a gun which was not in his inventory.)
Metro, it has been reported, then plans to “monitor” gun shows for the
next few months. If they are not “satisfied” with the “progress” Metro
has threatened to refuse to allow gun shows to continue in their
facilities.
All of this would appear to be a blatant violation of Oregon’s
preemption law, but we have been told that Metro plans to proceed
anyway.
Metro, reportedly, will also try to force gun show promoters to pay for
undercover police to engage in surveillance at Portland area gun shows.
What they could not accomplish in the legislature they are trying to ram
through by skirting the law.
This move is being spearheaded by Metro’s Chief Executive, career
politician Mike Burton <[email protected]> who appears to be
working for anti-gun Senator Ginny Burdick rather than the people who
elected him.
As this story develops we will keep you informed. You might want to take
a moment to let Burton and Metro know how you feel about this attack on
your privacy. They can be reached at (503) 797-1700 .
