Members of the Russian ultra-nationalist party led by Vladimir
Zhirinovsky used a rally in Moscow yesterday to call on lawmakers to
adopt an amendment allowing Russians to carry handguns. Party members
demonstrated under slogans such as “Outlawing revolvers favours
criminals” and “Legal weapons save hundreds of thousands of lives.”
The
amendment stipulates that Russians be able to possess as many as five
handguns and carry them, except in stores selling alcohol. “Russia ranks
second in the world for criminality, and Moscow is one of the world’s 20
most dangerous cities,” said an association called Civil Security, which
took part in the demonstration. The commission in charge of security,
which is to examine the amendment today, has recommended that it be
rejected.
