Handgun Control, Inc seeks a president who will help to make gun control a pivotal issue in local, state and national elections and lawmaking in the year 2000 and beyond. The president will provide organizational and programmatic leadership to the board and staff, develop strategies leading to the increased effectiveness of the organizations and the strengthening of it’s financial base, oversee the creation and implementation of a media strategy that reinforces HCI’s legislative and political goals and mission, and act as one of it’s public spokespeople.
The ideal candidate will bring significant experience as an organizational leader, having created a culture where the achievement of high standards of performance, staff accountability, and professional development are commonplace. S/he will have a successful record of building political power through organizing and collaborating with people from different political and ideological perspectives, a thorough and current knowledge of how the federal government works, and a track record of matching political strategies to organizational action. Expe5rience in a policy making role with an executive, legislative, or administrative agency is a plus. Familiarity with the administration of non profit organizations, and with the dynamics of a board of directors is preferred. A passion for the issue is required.
