Don’t blame all for mad acts

Re: “The real issue: Semi-automatics versus gun registry” – Sept. 23

I begin by asking L. Ian MacDonald two questions. The first is, do you
own firearms? The second, do you hunt? If the answer is, as I suspect,
no to each then you have no business spouting your fact-less drivel on
what hunters or farmers do or do not need or lawfully use in the form of
firearms.

Your ignorance on firearms is obvious. Any action of firearm is capable
in firing multiple rounds and in many cases as quickly and even more
accurately than a semi-automatic. In cases such as school shootings the
mayhem transpires over many, many minutes making the type of firearm
action irrelevant.

Further, because some gutless lunatic for whatever reason kills and
injures innocent people with a firearm it is not the fault of every
lawful firearms owner in Canada. If someone leaves a bar drunk, gets in
an automobile and slaughters an entire family, does your rationale blame
all automobile owners, only the people that drive the same type
automobile or do you blame everyone that ever has a drink of alcohol or
all of the above?

In fact, it is none of these but instead the fault of the impaired
driver and no one else’s, despite our society’s attempt to rationale
every tragedy by blaming everyone from parents to politicians to video
games, everyone that is but the person actually responsible.

I realize that it has been stated several times but it needs to be said
until people finally understand, you can’t legislate insanity. People
like Kimveer Gill, Gamil Gharbi (a.k.a. Mark Lepine), Clifford Olson and
many more like them have always been and always will be amongst us in
society. As unfortunate as that sounds it is a fact. In the United
States, Timothy McVeigh killed 268 people in seconds with fertilizer and
diesel fuel. It appears the only thing that would have stopped him is
his own conscience. Again, you can’t legislate conscience. Stop blaming
law-abiding citizens for the acts of mad men.
