Gun laws don’t work

I must thank Gary Geensen (Man Gets House Arrest For Gun Incident –
Jan. 6) for again showing us that Canada’s firearms laws do not prevent
firearms from falling into the hands of criminals.
The acceptance by the Crown of a guilty plea to careless use of a
sawed-off shotgun was no doubt the result of brilliant negotiation by
Geensen’s defence counsel, James Marentette. If I ever get charged with
violating a gun law — and that won’t happen — I’m calling Marentette.
Did Geensen and other lawbreakers receive a “strong message” as Justice
Epstein intended? I doubt it.
It is against the law: to buy any gun without possessing a firearms
licence; to possess an unregistered firearm; to store a loaded and
unlocked firearm; to store a prohibited firearm in a gym bag in the
garage; to buy shotgun ammunition without having a firearms licence.
Geensen’s moronic behaviour could have easily killed his wife or son.
Why did he buy the gun a year ago? What were his intentions then?
