accidents and heart attack deaths keep growing a bit every year.

LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS KILLED – 2006

THESE STATISTICS REPRESENT PRELIMINARY INFORMATION RECEIVED BY THE FBI,
JANUARY THROUGH DECEMBER 2006:

FORTY-EIGHT LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS HAVE BEEN KILLED DUE TO CRIMINAL
ACTIONS. DURING THE SAME TIME PERIOD IN 2005, 55 OFFICERS WERE SLAIN.
TWENTY-TWO DEATHS OCCURRED IN THE SOUTH, ELEVEN IN THE WEST, SEVEN IN THE
NORTHEAST, SIX IN THE MIDWEST, AND TWO IN PUERTO RICO. CIRCUMSTANCES
INVOLVING THE 48 SLAIN OFFICERS ARE AS FOLLOWS: NINE WERE AMBUSHED, NINE
WERE PERFORMING TRAFFIC PURSUITS/STOPS, SEVEN WERE ANSWERING DISTURBANCE
CALLS (TWO BEING DOMESTIC DISTURBANCE CALLS), SIX WERE ANSWERING ROBBERY
CALLS, SIX WERE INVESTIGATING SUSPICIOUS PERSONS OR CIRCUMSTANCES, FOUR WERE
ATTEMPTING OTHER ARRESTS, TWO WERE INVOLVED IN
DRUG-RELATED MATTERS, TWO WERE SLAIN IN TACTICAL SITUATIONS, ONE WAS
HANDLING MENTALLY DERANGED PERSON,
ONE WAS INVOLVED IN INVESTIGATIVE ACTIVITY, AND ONE OFFICER WAS HANDLING
PRISONER. FIREARMS WERE USED IN 46 KILLINGS (35 HANDGUNS, EIGHT RIFLES, TWO
SHOTGUNS, AND ONE FIREARM TYPE NOT REPORTED) AND VEHICLES IN TWO.

TWENTY-FOUR OFFICERS WERE WEARING PROTECTIVE VESTS. THERE HAVE BEEN 47
SEPARATE INCIDENTS IN WHICH THESE 48 OFFICERS HAVE BEEN SLAIN. FORTY-ONE OF
THE 47 INCIDENTS HAVE BEEN CLEARED BY ARREST OR EXCEPTIONAL MEANS.

SIXTY-FIVE LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS HAVE BEEN ACCIDENTALLY KILLED. DURING
THE SAME TIME PERIOD IN 2005, 67 OFFICERS WERE ACCIDENTALLY KILLED.
TWENTY-FIVE DEATHS OCCURRED IN THE SOUTH, 20 IN THE WEST, 14 IN THE MIDWEST,
FIVE IN THE NORTHEAST, AND ONE IN PUERTO RICO. CIRCUMSTANCES INVOLVING THE
65 DEATHS ARE AS FOLLOWS:

37 WERE KILLED IN AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENTS, 11 WERE STRUCK
BY VEHICLES, EIGHT WERE KILLED IN MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENTS,
FOUR WERE ACCIDENTALLY SHOT, THREE WERE KILLED IN AIRCRAFT ACCIDENTS, AND
TWO WERE INVOLVED IN BICYCLE ACCIDENTS.
