To the Editor,
In his recent report Dean Pritchard details the the killing of Kevin
Wandowich by Joseph Sys including the facts that, “Sys has a lengthy
criminal record, including three prior convictions for assault and one
conviction for assault with a weapon. At the time of the shooting he was
on bail awaiting trial on drug charges (for which) he was ultimately
acquitted.” Presumably, given this record, Sys was also subject to a gun
possession ban. Sys had gone out of his way to intentionally confront
his victim with a loaded gun and shot the man while pistol-whipping him
as he was being held on the ground and beaten by another assailant.
Following Sys’ sentencing Justice Brenda Keyser proceeded to reduce his
18 year sentence to 15 by giving him double credit for time served
awaiting trial. With parole release after 1/3 of his time, he can be
back among us after he has served one-third of this time, or five years.
The learned judge then opined, “It just points out the dangers that
handguns can cause.”
With all her extensive knowledge of criminal law, perhaps Her Honor can
enlighten this humble scribe as to how exactly it is that the gun was at
fault here?
