Colorado Legislative Update — February 11, 2000

HB 1242 is dead thanks to your hard work and action! The bill was
killed in committee this morning by a vote of 6 to 5.

As you probably recall, HB 1242 was the bill that would impose the
unconstitutional Brady Registration checks on private sales at gun
shows, which would probably have ENDED GUN SHOWS in Colorado and
represented an obvious first step in REGISTRATION OF ALL PRIVATE
SALES.

The pressure from the gun owning community in Colorado is what kept
this from becoming law, in spite of a massive anti-gun push from
Governor “Gun Control” Owens. He was twisting arms and applying a
lot of pressure, but you fought him back. Thank you for all of your
hard work.

Unfortunately — and we are sure you know what’s coming — the
battle was won but the war isn’t over.

Even as this alert was being written, other bills from both houses
were going into committees and/or having other action taken on them.

It is not yet clear what the situation with HB 1272 is. This is the
anti-gun bill that would prohibit sales of firearms to 18-21 year
olds even though they can fight our wars.

SB 125, a state-level Brady bill that expands the unconstitutional
powers of the CBI, is moving but its status was not known at press
time, either.
