Los Angeles-AP — A Los Angeles carjacker who was pummeled by members of a college judo team last summer has been sentenced to eleven years in prison.

Twenty-year-old Tyrone Hogan was sentenced yesterday.

The prosecutor says Hogan ditched a stolen car in a gas station in Hollywood. He then tried to commandeer a van being used by the judo club, which was visiting from Florida International University.

A team member says Hogan asked for money, then reached inside to take the keys.

The club’s instructor says at that point, the judo squad jumped him and punched him — and held him on the ground like a pretzel until police arrived.

The judo club members were in Los Angeles to teach a class in self-defense
