CARJACK ATTEMPT: A 47-year-old Newcastle man called police at 11 p.m. Thursday after three male juveniles approached his car. The man was waiting to turn from Northeast Sunset Boulevard north onto Duvall Avenue Northeast when the three approached and asked through the open window for a cigarette. The driver said he had none, and one youth pulled a knife.

The driver then reached for his own weapon, a semi-automatic handgun, at which point the juveniles ran away. Police suspect the incident was an attempted carjacking; a K-9 was unable to find the suspects.
