What To Do If a Gunman Comes into Your Office
November 3, 1999
SEATTLE – The deadly shooting in Seattle shows that workplace violence can happen anywhere at any time.
What would you do if someone came into your workplace with a gun?
Experts on workplace violence say even though it’s difficult to imagine, it is important to have a plan. Sacramento hostage negotiator and police sergeant Larry Chavez gives seminars on preventing and reacting to workplace violence.
He says each employee should have an escape route planned in case of violence, just as you would in case of fire. “Probably the best thing to do, even if your department or organization doesn’t have a kind of drill is for you to sit down, think your way through the situation and say ‘what would I do?’,” he said.
If you are faced with an armed person, and you can’t escape, Chavez has these suggestions:
Talk to the person in a slow, low tone.
Try to act calm.
Don’t act in an authoritative manner. The person often already feels frustrated by authority.
Show your willingness to help the person.
Tell the person your name if you can. Show them family photos, do anything that makes you look like a “person,” not just a representative of a company.
“If person sees you not as a threat, but someone trying to help, and sees you as a human being, there’s gonna be less likelihood that you’ll be a casualty of that incident,” said Chavez.
