Boulder City Council to unveil sweeping new gun controls;
Rocky Mountain News surveying lawmakers on gun issues
Monday, December 6, 1999 — In a supposed response to the tragedy at
Columbine High School, the Boulder City Council will consider
recommendations from their city attorney to enact broad new gun
controls.
According to sources, the Council will hear proposals for:
banning the possession of any firearm outside of the home or place of
business;
banning the possession and/or sale of all assault weapons;
banning juvenile possession of any pistol, rifle or shotgun;
creating a new crime of negligent storage of a firearm.
Though none of these proposals will have any effect on incidents like
Columbine, clearly the tragedy is being used as a springboard for the
limitation of citizens’ civil rights.
At the time of this writing no more specifics were available, and
many questions remain about the viability of such incredibly broad
gun controls. If firearms cannot be taken out of the home, hunting
is apparently an outlawed sport, and carrying in a vehicle for self
protection is out of the question.
Here’s what to do: Call the Boulder City Council today at (303) 441-
3090 to voice your objection to their Nazi-like gun proposals.
(Though you can e-mail the City Council at [email protected],
phone calls have more impact) For a city that places so much
emphasis on “civil rights” they should remember that the 2nd
Amendment is the guarantor of the other rights.
Is the Rocky Mountain News now lobbying for gun curbs?
Colorado state legislators received an odd survey about gun issues
from the Denver Rocky Mountain News, asking a wide array of questions
about personal use of firearms and the surrounding political issues.
In a December 1 letter from DRMN Editor John Temple, lawmakers are
told that “Gun sales and ownership are expected to be major issues
this session.”
Temple explains that the responses from these questionnaires will be
published before the session begins on January 5th.
The questionnaire asks Senators and Representatives if they have a
gun in their household, how many handguns, long guns or rifles they
own, if they have ever used a gun in self-defense, to hunt, to target
shoot, and if they believe the 2nd Amendment gives Americans the
right to own a gun. It even asks “Have you ever shot anyone?”
It also lists the new gun control proposals of Governor Bill Owens,
and polls the lawmakers on their stance on each issue.
We’ll keep you up to speed as both items develop.
