Make laws governing knives as strict as those for guns, Britons urge
their Prime Minister

As police investigate a recent spate of stabbings in Toronto, some
Britons issued an emotional plea to their government yesterday to make
the laws governing knives as strict as those on guns. Representatives
from the Knives Destroy Lives campaign, led by Antoinette Rodney, whose
15-year old son Kieran Rodney-Davis was stabbed to death for his mobile
phone in Fulham last year, made the plea in a letter to the British
Prime Minister. The group wants a mandatory five-year minimum jail term
for those caught carrying an object with a blade longer than three
inches and a six-month jail term for carrying a shorter blade. They are
also calling on the courts to hand out harsher sentences that reflect
the severity of knife crime, said police constable Norman Brennan. “It
really is about time we started getting knife legislation alongside that
of guns,” he said.
