MP Injured, Assistant Killed In Surgery Sword Attack
A Liberal Democrat MP has been wounded and his assistant killed in a sword
attack at a constituency office.
Cheltenham MP Nigel Jones was slashed and his aide, named locally as Lib Dem
councillor and school governor Andrew Pennington, stabbed to death at the
party’s office in St George’s Street, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

Married father-of-three Mr Jones, 51, was taken to Cheltenham General
Hospital, where he is being treated for lacerations to his hands.

His condition is not life-threatening, but he is expected to stay in
hospital overnight.

Police arrested a 49-year-old Cheltenham man, and Detective Chief Inspector
Wayne Murdoch said: “We are treating it as a murder inquiry.”

The attack took place at 4.30pm, and an ambulance was called two minutes
later.

Eye witnesses said they saw a 6ft man brandishing what looked like a Samurai
sword going into Mr Jones’s surgery. One described how the man appeared to
go “crazy”.

A witness went into the building and saw a man lying on the floor, having
apparently suffered about 10 wounds. A man carrying a sword was chased from
the scene.

Neighbour Graham Norton, 33, of St George’s Street, told how his friend
David Copson nursed the dying man in his arms.

Mr Copson tried to give the stabbed man the kiss of life and held him as he
bled to death from a wound in his side.
