PETALUMA
Homeowner shoots knife-wielding invader
Monday, May 28, 2001

A man was shot and critically wounded after he barged into the Petaluma
home where his ex-girlfriend was staying and threatened one of the
residents with a knife, police said yesterday.
John Varney, 32, of Novato, suffered a shotgun wound to the chest at
about 9:30 p.m. Saturday after entering the home at 516 Cherry St.
through the unlocked front door. He was immediately confronted by Eric
Daviesson, 31, who lives in the house with his wife.

Petaluma police Lt. Dave Sears said the Daviessons were sheltering
Varney’s ex-girlfriend, who had complained about domestic violence.
Sears said Varney had previously threatened to kill the Daviessons.

Varney allegedly brandished a steak knife and advanced on Daviesson, who
pulled out a shotgun and fired, apparently in self-defense, Sears said.

Varney was unconscious and on life support at Memorial Hospital in Santa
Rosa yesterday. No charges have been filed.
