COACHELLA — A man was shot twice Friday by a store clerk during an
attempted robbery, Riverside County sheriff’s deputies reported.
The man, tentatively identified as Salvador Sanchez, suffered wounds to
the leg and stomach and was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in
Palm Springs.
Deputies said the wounded man is listed in stable condition. Authorities
haven’t verified whether this is the man’s true name; and his age and
hometown were not immediately known.
Mohammed Alwishah, a clerk at Y & M Market, said this is the third time
he has been robbed at gunpoint in four years. “If they’re going to kill
me, I have to do the best I can,” Alwishah said.
The clerk told deputies two men entered the store in the 1500 block of
Second Street just after noon and one man took out a six-pack of beer
from a cooler. “He took it to the counter as if he was going to buy it,”
Deputy Sarah Bautista said. The second man reportedly pulled out a gun
and pointed it at the clerk’s head.
But the clerk pulled out a gun and shot first, Bautista said.
A 9-mm pistol was recovered at the scene by deputies.
Alwishah said he stayed calm during the incident. “I thank God
everything is all right now,” he said.
The other man fled the store after the shooting, along with two other
men he earlier had been seen with in front of the store, Bautista said.
The shooting is under investigation, and no other people were taken into
custody Friday, Bautista said.
