We’d rather step away from a fight: Canadians don’t buy guns when

OTTAWA – Canadians are more likely to change their daily routines or
avoid certain places to protect themselves from crime rather than buy a
gun or moving, says a new report.

More than three-quarters of Canadians regularly used some means to
protect themselves and their property from crime in 2004, says a
Statistics Canada study released Thursday.

But only one per cent of study participants said they bought a gun as a
precautionary measure.

About five per cent said they changed their phone number, while four per
cent moved into a new residence. The findings are similar to a 1999
study on victimization, according to Statistics Canada.

About one in 10 people said they stayed home at night because they
feared going out alone.

Canadians are much more likely to insert preventive measures in their
daily routines, according to the report.

For instance, six in 10 Canadians said they locked their car doors while
alone in a vehicle. Four in 10 said they kept safety in mind when
planning their route, or checked the backseat to make sure no one was
there when they were getting into their car.

“The preventative measures that they do use tend to be those that
involve modifying their behaviour and their activities as opposed to
more extreme measures,” said Andrea Taylor-Butts, analyst at the
Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics at Statistics Canada.

People who used more extreme crime prevention measures were more likely
to have been a victim of crime in the previous year.

More than half of study respondents who were also victims of crime said
they changed their routines to prevent victimization. But only 29 per
cent of people who hadn’t been victims of crime reported the same.
