City funds buses for marchers / Cost estimated at $4,000 to $7,000

The city of Richmond paid for eight buses to take gun-control advocates to the Million Mom March on Sunday, a move that has upset some gun-rights supporters.

“I think that both gun-rights supporters and gun-control supporters should be outraged that the city would engage in this kind of advocacy at taxpayer expense,” said John Velleco, a spokesman for the Virginia-based Gun Owners of America.

But officials argue the city has always taken an active gun-control stance because of Richmond’s long history of firearm violence. In 1994, the year Richmond’s homicide count climbed to an all-time high of 160, guns were used as the murder weapon in 141 of those cases.
