The Situation: The committee is meeting Thursday 1/28 at 1:30 pm,
and plans to hold hearings on 9 bills:
* HB1201 by McElhany — Weapons possession by a felon
* HB1272 by Gotlieb — Prohibiting gun sales to 18-20 year olds
* HB1242 by Gordon — Brady Registration checks at gun shows
* HB1241 by Lee — Previous offenders possessing weapons
* HB1114 by Lee — Keeping concealed weapon permit information
confidential
* HB1235 by Lee — Fingerprinting of Juveniles
* HB1243 by Lee — Parental consent for firearms for juveniles
* HB1240 by Chavez — Using juvenile records for Brady
Registration checks
* HB1214 by Decker — Penalty for firearms straw purchasers
Please don’t let the anti-gunners have more opportunities to ram gun
control through the legislature. Call the committee members and
urge them to stand against gun control and protect your rights.
Insist they oppose every gun bill with the exception of HB 1114.
Remember — Governor Gun Control Owens is actively stalking gun
rights. Rest assured he will fight tooth and nail to expand Brady
Act powers and give the CBI even more authority. Don’t doubt that
they will use HB 1240 to deny even more law-abiding Coloradoans the
Right to Keep and Bear Arms. Already, they can deny rights to
persons even ACCUSED of a crime. Owens and his anti-gun cronies
already have you guilty until proven innocent — and now they want
to force this unconstitutional attitude down your throat at gun
shows by enacting HB 1242 with the apparent consent of some other
gun groups.
The Recent Events:
Senate Judiciary Committee passed SB125, the Baby Brady Registration
bill. Though Sen. John Andrews and 3 liberal Democrats saved the
day by defeating an attempt by Sen. Ken Arnold to make CBI deny a
purchase based on an arrest (which they are doing now by presuming
someone guilty until they prove themselves innocent), this bill is
not out of the woods yet: expect moderate and liberal Republicans to
do the bidding of Gov. Owens by amending the bill while on the
Senate floor, which is where we could lose that battle.
The House State Affairs Committee on Tuesday killed these bills:
HB1220 by Paul Zimmerman (prohibiting purchase of handguns at gun
shows for 18-20 year olds) and HB1245 by Sue Windels (The Teacher
Disarmament Act, prohibiting weapons in schools). It passed 2 good
bills: HB1208 by Lauri Clapp to limit the lawsuits on firearms
manufacturers, which Governor Gun Control vetoed last year. (Though
Owens has assured lawmakers he will sign it this year, we all know
what his word is worth.) The other good bill is HB1289 by Lynn
Hefley, to create a statewide Preemption for firearms laws. This
bill would overturn Denver’s assault weapons ban and stop their
practice of seizing vehicles simply for having a firearm in your
car.
Today the Senate Judiciary Committee killed two bills: SB10 by Ron
Teck, a companion bill to HB1208 (see note above) and SB154 by
MaryAnne Tebedo, a very feeble attempt at creating statewide
criteria for issuing concealed carry permits.
The battle has been raging at the Capitol these past weeks, and your
stanch attitude and strong action have really made the difference.
Please Don’t stop now! The only bill in the hopper for Thursday
hearings that isn’t anti-gun is HB 1114 — which will keep concealed
carry permit holder information confidential. The rest of these
bills are either already blatantly anti-gun, or can easily be used
as vehicles for anti-gun amendments and changes if allowed out of
committee.
