Three Arrested After Shootout At Meat Company
Owner Shoots Back During Robbery Attempt

EAST HAVEN, Conn. — Three suspects were arrested in the attempted
robbery of a meat company in which the owner of the business and a
suspect were wounded.
Armed men shot the owner in the leg during a robbery attempt Thursday
night, according to police. The victim also shot one of the alleged
robbers, police said.
Police said Joseph Gigliotti, owner of New Haven Provisions of Foxon
Road, underwent surgery at Hospital of Saint Raphael in New Haven
Thursday night. His condition was not available Friday morning.
Gigliotti shot one of the three robbery suspects in the shoulder during
the holdup attempt, police Sgt. Robert Flodquist said. That man, whose
name was not immediately available, was in surgery at Yale-New Haven
Hospital, Flodquist said.
“You’re entitled to self-defense,” said Sgt. Robert Flodquist. “In
Connecticut, a person can use reasonable force to defend themselves.”
The injured suspect, identified as Michael
Hamilton, 25, of Hamden and a second suspect, Nelson Alverez, 21, who
police said drove the injured man to the hospital, were arrested at
Yale-New Haven Hospital.
Hamilton underwent emergency surgery was listed in serious condition
Friday morning.
A third suspect fled on foot and New Haven police later arrested him
near the New Haven-East Haven border, Flodquist said.
Flodquist said the shootings occurred when the men confronted Gigliotti
as he was getting into his car with a money bag.
The three suspects were charged with attempted robbery.
