Disarming citizens makes them victims

Letter writer Daniel Tang asks the question about firearms as an
acceptable means for conflict resolution and protection, “Is this really
what we want in our community?”

This is, as he puts it, a “no brainer”, but probably not in the way he
intends your readers to conclude. Refusing to allow law abiding and
responsible citizens to exercise their universal and sovereign right to
security of the person, by not permitting them to acquire the most
effective means with which to obtain that security, renders the right
itself meaningless. Keeping such citizens disarmed only means that
criminals, who by definition don’t obey the law, are the ones who are.
Reducing citizens to the status of victims is not something that anyone
should want in their community.
