Local Liberal candidate calls it quits

A controversial federal Liberal in Edmonton withdrew his candidacy
yesterday after a blog revealed his resume was inaccurate.
Farhan Chak, who was running in Edmonton-Mill Woods-Beaumont, claimed on
his website to have received a doctorate from the University of Durham
in England. But according to the blog “Angry in the Great White North,”
writer Steve Janke contacted the university by e-mail and was informed
Chak never had a degree conferred.
Chak had been at the centre of controversy after a newspaper revealed
he’d been charged with firearms offences related to a shotgun being
discharged at a nightclub. Chak, who’d also courted controversy for his
views on Muslim extremism, said the charges were dropped after those in
the club agreed it was a case of mistaken identity.
Yesterday, the Liberal party accepted Chak’s resignation from the race,
said spokesman Kevin Feehan.
“Mr. Chak voluntarily withdrew his candidacy today for Edmonton-Mill
Woods-Beaumont, and the party has accepted his withdrawal. The party
thanks him for his participation and his interest in running for the
party. But we understand the scrutiny he has been under has been
intense, and that for personal and family reasons he does not want to be
involved.”
Feehan said the party screened Chak’s resume extensively, having him
fill out a 20-page application and provide copies of all the necessary
certificates to prove his credentials. Feehan would not speculate as to
how Chak’s university credentials passed muster.
