FIREARMS AND CRIME
by Daniel D. Polsby, Professor of Law, Northwestern University
What is the true relationship between gun controls and crime? In the 1950s, .45 caliber automatic pistols and powerful military surplus rifles were easily available by mail order through ads in magazines like Popular Mechanics and Field & Stream. Yet the murder rate in the 1950s was less than half the rate of the 1990s, and other forms of violent crime were also markedly lower. In this challenging study, Professor Polsby shows that restrictive gun laws have not been shown to reduce crime rates. In fact, he argues, the opposite seems to be true: widespread ownership of firearms may actually reduce crime. Finally, the author shows that any attempt to outlaw private ownership of guns would be as futile as attempts to outlaw possession and distribution of drugs.
