Subject: Citizen silly series
To the Moderator:
My letter to the Citizen
To the Editor:
Over the past six days Glen McGregor has run a series on the lawful =
ownership of firearms in Canada. He tells us that the Canadian Firearms
= Centre has registered a little over 7 million firearms. These numbers
= are highly suspect as Canadians imported ( according to government =
importation records) between 1966 and now 11-12 million firearms alone,
= those firearms already here prior to 1966 would be in addition to the
=
11-12 million which makes the registry less than 40% complete. Evidence
= to support this reality is the number of guns collected whenever a gun
= amnesty is run.
Aside from fear-mongering about so-called assault weapons, full autos =
and machine guns McGregor makes no mention of how many times any of =
these firearms were actually used in crime? Simple, virtually never, =
which was why the nonsensical assault weapon ban in the U.S. was not =
extended. The silliness of the assault weapon position is advocated by =
the terminally ignorant. For example if one had two identical VW Beetles
= and painted one black and maybe added some shark teeth to the front =
should it be banned because it looks mean even when the functionality of
= the two cars is identical? This series would suggest yes. Maybe we =
should ban trenchcoats as well since they can be used to conceal a =
weapon.
It is difficult for the practical mind to accept that the gun registry =
is a useful tool given the upwards of 7 million queries by police that =
have failed to solve or prevent a single firearm related crime. Contrast
= that absence of success rate with the newer DNA registry which has
since = inception identified 6,144 offenders(Library of Parliament) plus
linked = one crime to another forensically 929 times. Cost of DNA
registry to = date $26.4 million, cost of gun registry many hundreds of
millions with = a yearly maintenace cost over twice that of the DNA
registry. Where = would you spend our tax dollars?
The single most thoughtless act of this series was the release of =
Canadian Firearms Centre data about the whereabouts of firearms in this
= country. Bad enough that the first two digits of the postal code was =
released McGregor then identified those areas with the greatest number =
of guns per capita thereby helping criminals greatly increase their odds
= of robbing a house with guns, some areas the odds are almost 90%. No =
question, this particular bit of stupidity endangers the lives of all =
house holders.
Now is the time for a crackdown on this useless and most dangerous gun =
registry, scrap it immediately, lives are at stake. Did you know that =
since the registry’s completion July 2003 the number of gun murders has
= increased? Canadians have been misled and lied to for far too long.
This = Liberal gun control farce never was about public safety, just as
ADSCAM = never was about buying loyalty to Canada, or Kyoto scam about
reducing = green house gases. It is about wasting many billions of our
hard earned = money on questionable benefit lacking, ill-conceived
ventures.

Dear Sir:
It is very disconcerting to me that the latest fascination that the
popular
media has been with the issue of semi automatic firearms. Wendy Cukier
has
recently expressed a desire to ban all semi automatic firearms as she
feels
it would contribute to public safety.
On July 12, 1989 Christian Dornier of Luxiol France used a 12 gauge
double
barrel shotgun and shot twenty one people of which fourteen of these
shooting victims died. All of this without the luxury of efficient rapid
fire systems.
The double barrel is a break or hinge action firearm. This requires the
shooter to release the catch holding the barrels remove the previously
fired
empty cases and insert two new shotgun cartridges into the breech close
the
action disengage the safety or in the case of an exposed hammer model,
cock
the hammers, now the shotgun is ready to fire. It can only fire the two
cartridges and then the process must be repeated. A very inefficient
firearm
at best when it is compared to modern repeating firearms.
My point simply is that without any particular tactical and or firearms
training Christian Dornier was quite capable of compiling an equal
number of
victims that Ghamil Gharbi/Marc Lepine was able to manage at Ecole
Polytechnique.
Ms. Cukier does not get it, it is not the gun, the results of these two
incidents were tragically the same.
